Never hyperventilate before going under
Some people take lots of quick, deep breaths before swimming underwater, thinking it helps them stay down longer. It can actually make blacking out more likely, because it masks the body’s natural urge to breathe. Breathe normally and come up when you feel the need.
Always swim with someone watching
- Never swim underwater alone.
- Make sure a capable adult is watching from the side, not also swimming.
- Keep children within sight and reach at all times.
- Keep underwater swims short and relaxed.
