Planning smart pool control from the start makes life easier
You can add smarter controls to an existing pool, but it’s usually simpler and neater to plan them in from day one. Here’s what we’d suggest thinking about.
Match the system to your equipment
Not every control unit works with every pump, heater or light. The simplest route is to choose your equipment and your controls together, so everything talks to each other properly.
Think about your Wi-Fi
The control unit usually lives in or near the plant room, which can be some way from the house. A weak signal means a frustrating app. It’s worth checking coverage early and planning for a wired connection or a signal booster if needed.
Decide what you actually want to control
Some people want everything on their phone. Others just want heating and lights. Be honest about how you’ll use your pool. A simpler system you enjoy using beats a complicated one you ignore.
Consider who else will use it
If family members or a pool service engineer need access, check how easy it is to share control and set different permission levels. It’s also worth thinking about children. You may want some functions, like heating or lights, to be locked so they can only be changed by adults.
Look for good support and updates
Apps and control units receive software updates from time to time. These can add features and fix bugs. When choosing a system, it helps to know that it’s well supported and that updates are straightforward to install.
Keep safety in mind
Anything involving electricity near water must be installed by suitably qualified people and meet the relevant regulations. Questions we get asked a lot
Do I need a new pool to get smart controls?
Not always. Many existing pools can be upgraded, but it depends on the age and type of your equipment. We’re happy to take a look and tell you honestly what’s possible.
Will it work if my internet goes down?
Most systems keep running their schedules even without an internet connection. You just won’t be able to change things remotely until it’s back.
Is it complicated to use?
The better apps are designed to be simple, with clear buttons and readings. We’ll show you how everything works when we hand over your pool.
Can I still control things at the pool itself?
Yes. There’s usually a local panel or manual option as well. It’s good to have a backup, and some functions such as cover operation are best done at the poolside anyway.
Does it mean I don’t need servicing?
No. Your pool still needs regular care and servicing. The app simply makes day to day adjustments quicker and gives you a clearer view of how things are running.
Can I add more features later?
Often, yes, as long as the control unit has spare capacity and the new equipment is compatible. It’s worth leaving some room for growth when you first plan the system.
