You’ll see lots of terms used for the same idea. Drop in pool, preformed pool, ready made pool and prefab pool all tend to describe a factory made shell or structure. The names vary, but the questions to ask are the same: what is it made from, how is it installed, and who looks after it afterwards?

- Survey and design. We visit, look at access, ground conditions, levels and services, and talk about how you’ll use the pool.

- Excavation. The hole is dug slightly larger than the shell, with care taken over spoil removal and access.
- A solid base. A level, stable base is laid so the shell is properly supported.
- Delivery and placing. The shell arrives on a lorry and is lifted into place, often with a crane.
- Connecting and backfilling. Pipework is connected, and the pool is filled with water at the same pace as the surrounding area is backfilled, so pressure stays balanced.
- Finishing. Coping, paving, covers, lighting and landscaping bring it all together.

“Will it look cheap?”

“Will it float out of the ground?”

“Is it just a smaller, simpler pool?”
Some factory shells are compact, but many are generous family pools with long swimming lengths. A prefabricated swimming pool can be every bit as useful as a hand built one. The real limits are your garden size and access, not the method.
“What if the ground is sloping or tricky?”

- Check the water regularly. Keep an eye on sanitiser and pH, and adjust little and often.
- Keep it clean. Skim the surface and let a robotic cleaner handle the floor.
- Look after the filter. Backwash or clean it as advised for your system.
- Use your cover. It keeps heat in and leaves out.
- Book regular servicing. A yearly check helps catch small issues early.
A quick word on chemical safety
If you handle pool chemicals yourself, always follow the label. Wear gloves and eye protection, and never mix different chemicals. Add chemical to water, never water to chemical. Keep swimmers out until the water is balanced, and store everything safely away from children and pets.
