When families start thinking seriously about a home pool, one length comes up again and again. Ten metres feels generous without taking over the garden. It gives you room to swim, room to play and room to relax, all in one place.
That is why a 10m pool is one of the most requested sizes we talk about. It sits in a sweet spot between a compact plunge pool and a very long lap pool. For many UK gardens it is big enough to feel like a proper swimming pool, yet still leaves space for a terrace, some lawn and planting.

How much garden does a 10m pool need?
The water is only one part of the footprint. You also need space to walk around it, somewhere to sit and a home for the plant equipment.
Here is what to allow for:
- The pool itself, including steps and any ledges moulded into the shell.
- A comfortable walkway on all sides, wider where you plan to sit.
- A terrace for loungers, a table or an outdoor kitchen.
- Room at one end for a cover box or mechanism if you choose an automatic cover.
- A ventilated spot for the pump, filter and heat pump, ideally out of sight.
- Access for machinery and a crane lift during installation.
Put all of this together and you need a good sized, reasonably level garden. Long, narrow gardens often suit this length well, because the pool can run along the garden with a terrace near the house and lawn beyond. Keep the garden in balance
A pool that fills the whole garden can feel crowded. Try to leave some lawn, planting or open space so the water sits within a setting rather than taking everything over. The best designs feel as if the pool has always been there.
Think about the view
A long pool looks lovely when it lines up with something. That could be the kitchen doors, a garden path or a favourite tree at the far end. Lining the pool up with a key view from the house makes the whole garden feel planned. It also means you can enjoy the water from indoors on days when it is too chilly to swim.
Choosing the width and depth of a 10 metre pool
Once you are happy with the length, width and depth make a big difference to how the pool feels.
Width
Narrower pools suit lap swimming and take up less garden. Wider pools give more room for play, floating and socialising. Most families choose a width that allows two people to swim side by side comfortably, with space left over for steps and seating.
Depth

Try to keep a clear view of the water from the house, and agree simple pool rules with the whole family. Never leave young children alone near the water, even for a moment. Store chemicals securely, away from children and pets.

Heating

Colour changing lights are popular with families and make summer parties feel special. Lighting is best planned early so cables and fittings can be installed neatly with the rest of the equipment.
Water care
The pump and filter do the heavy lifting each day. You test the water once or twice a week, skim leaves, and run a robotic cleaner or vacuum regularly. When you handle chemicals, always follow the label, wear gloves and eye protection, never mix products, and add chemical to water, never water to chemical. Keep swimmers out until the water is balanced and store everything away from children and pets.

Is ten metres the right length for you?
A 10 metre pool is a great all rounder, but it is not the only option. It helps to compare it with what else might suit your garden.
